i just saw STS9 for New Years at the Regency in SF. it was a rocking show... although i was high as a kite.... It was my first time seeing sector nine and i noticed that they used laptops during a good portion of their performance.
I personally liked the groove that they layed down on the laptops, which they then proceeded to layer over with live performance. What do you all think?? have you seen any laptopists recently? what about how boring it is to watch someone hit enter on stage??? my personal conclusion is that i like the best of both worlds... Im looking forward to a new evolution of music kind of like studio music, where the best sequences blend with the best of live performance and all this can be performed live!!!!!

One of the most effective shows I"ve seen with a laptop artist was when I did my cd release party with the fabulous beatboxer/live looper Kid Beyond.

He used Ableton's live but controlled it entirely from midi footpedals. He told me that it was his goal to never touch the computer on stage........I think he did once in the whole set.

Impressively, he did an entire vocal rendition of one of Portiseheads songs replete with all the sound effects, instruments and arrangement from the record..........It just blew the crowd away....one of the best live/laptop aide things I've ever seen.

It's so funny to me that a crowd of people will be bothered by someone pushing buttons on a laptop live but will have a completely different response if the same person is using their feet to make the same entries of data to the computer.

I learned this when I would program for hours in my sampler only to have audiences completley ignore all the sound design work I had done while a friend of mine who only used old fashion stock programs on a synth with a wind synthesizer. He would be besieged by people after every show: "What is that instrument.........does it make it's own sounds?"

It made such an impression that I went out and bought a WX5 to
trigger my Repeater loops melodically live. Sure enough........LOL..........I"m besieged by people afterwards who ask, "What is that instrument.......does it make it's own sounds?"

and, apropos of mentioning Ableton's LIVE,

I'm excited because I was just asked to be an endorsee of that German company...... I can't wait to get a copy to start learning how to use my midi footpedals with it.

yeah, sts9 do an amazing job of creating an organic electronic sound. i think they are out in front of the jam band pack attempting to pull that off. There is a lot of room for innovation in this area and i'm excited to watch people step up and try to take the best elements from both approaches and combine them.

On a similar note, the best rendition I've seen of a live act was also a solo vocal+computer performance by probably my foavorite electonic artist: Jamie Lidell, he has an incredible record out on warp entitled "muddlin' gear" and is one half of one of my other favorites:Super Collider.

I saw Jamie Lidell a couple summers ago in berlin, and he was truly awesome! He improvised every track, laying down each part live very quickly and manipulating it with soime sort of control surface i couldn't see from my vantage point at the club. i believe the software he uses, (which is very similar to live, which i really really like btw) is something he wrote himself with max/msp and i can't recommend his music enough! he doesn't really come state-side much so if he does ever come to your area, do yourself a favor and check him out. He is truly fascinating!!

PS Rick kudos to gettting the live endorsement, that's awesome, and also congrats on the looking-to-be-great looping fest 2k4 too, i wish i could go but im in austin now...
